Facts About Zinc

1.  Life Expectancy.  Extensive studies on buildings have shown that life expectancy of Zinc can be 50 to 75 years depending on the local atmospheric conditions and geographical exposure.

2.  Patina.  Zinc's resistance to atmospheric corrosion is due to the formation of a homogenous layer of Zinc hydrocarbonate on its surface which serves as a natural protective coating called the Patina.

3.  White Rust.  When Zinc is in contact with humidity in the absence of co2 the protective coating is unable to form.  In this situation, areas of white rust may form on the surface.  There should be no film or membrane placed between the Zinc and the substrate, since any water trapped in this confined and humid space will encourage the production of white rust on the under-side of Zinc and will eventually result in the perforation of the material.

4.  Lichens and Mosses.  Acids running off certain mosses and lichens can cause a reaction with Zinc.  To prevent the build up of mosses and lichens on Zinc thoroughly clean the roof to eliminate all traces of them and then apply an approved protective coating to the Zinc.

5.  Contact with Metals.  Contact with the following metals is allowed:  Galvanised Steel, Painted Lead, Aluminium, Stainless Steel and Painted Iron (minimum of 2-3 coats of approved paint).  However contact with Copper is not permissable.

6.  Thermal Movements.  Any work involving Zinc must allow it to freely expand and contract.  The linear expansion od Zinc is 0.022mm per metre and per D.C.  Example:  The temperature may range from minus 30 degrees in winter to plus 80 degrees in the summer.  If you installed Zinc at an ambient temperature of 20dc bear in mind that the effect of a temperature change from 20 to 80dc means a 60dc inducing expansion, under these conditions, a 10 metre strip of roofing or cladding material would deviate as follows:  It would increase in length by 13.2mm (0.022mm x 10 x 60), it would contract by 11mm (0.022mm x 10 x 50).
